(WMC-TV) - The Memphis police force needs officers.

Director Toney Armstrong projects even more loss of man power than he is already experiencing. Right now his focus is getting more men and women in blue.

"I would love to see us get our own police headquarters," said Armstrong.

It is just one goal on Memphis Police Director Toney Armstrong's wish list as he finishes out the last three years of service as the city's top man in blue. But for now safety is his concern with regard to losing even more police officers.

"If we're gonna stick with our 2,480 man company. I'm 200 men, 200 people short," he said.

Director Armstrong says they need to replace the officers.

"We are projecting that we 're gonna lose 100 people this fiscal year," he said.

Mayor A C Wharton presented his scaled down budget for the city Tuesday. Director Armstrong hopes to present his budget in May.

"As you heard the mayor say that we, the police department, has lost positions through attrition. So there won't be an additional," said Armstong.

Director Armstrong says he hopes they will be able to find money for additional costs the department may have, but despite the loss of officers he does not think the city is at the point of compromising public safety.

Armstrong says they are at full service and respond to every call.

"But I think we are there where we have to identify what's essential and what type if police department do you want," said Armstrong.

We reached out to Mayor Wharton to discuss the director's concerns, but his office is closed in observance of the holiday.
