Chad German, Area Supervisor of the Ohio Department of Natural Resources, Division of Watercraft says he led an inspection last night of the boat used by the 4 people who died  on the fishing trip.

German says the boat is a late model, 21 foot Tracker Tundra, pro walleye fishing boat.  He says it is not a bass boat as earlier reported.  The boat has a 275 hp outboard motor, a proper size for that watercraft.

German says a complete inspection of the boat shows no damage that would contribute to a sinking.  He says all drain cocks on the boat were in place and there is no indication the boat had any leaks in the hull.

The boat is owned by Bryan Huff who German says is a very accomplished boater and could be classified as a professional fisherman.  He says family members say Huff has been out on the lake fishing several times this year. He also says the second man on the boat, Andrew Rose, is also an avid fisherman and is skilled in boat operation.

German says the boat was fully equipped with several safety devices; it had a two-way radio and a weather radio and a GPS unit .  It also had a couple of extra life vests and flotation cushions.  All of the fishing gear was stowed away on the boat, indicating it was headed to shore and the fishing had ended.

The weather conditions on the Lake were not extreme while the fishing excursion was underway.  And German says the boat was designed to handle the weather conditions of the day.

He also says no alcoholic beverages were found on the boat.

He says the sinking is unexplained.  German says the next step to look at the hard drive in the GPS unit to determine if the boat made any erratic maneuvers that could have contributed to it taking on water and eventually sinking.
