TOLEDO, OH (Toledo News Now) -

A scam involving candy has Whitmer High School officials and local police on high alert.

School officials are calling this "Candy-Gate." The DeVeaux Shopping Village in west Toledo is just one of the many places where this scam has occurred.

A group of teens, posing as members of the Whitmer High School football team, stand in front of area stores selling $1 candy bars for up to $5.

The problem? There aren't any fundraisers going on now.

"We've gotten some calls from people who were concerned about it. They've been doing it for awhile. We had some employees that actually were approached and when they began to ask the kids, "'Well, I work at Whitmer. What's your coach's name?'" They got very nervous and ran away, or they didn't know the coach's name," explained Randy Sehl, district police director at Whitmer High School.

If you come across this scam, you are urged to contact police immediately.
