Jury left to decide if mother is guilty of killing infant

The trial against Amanda Bacon is wrapping up this week, with the jury now in deliberations.

TOLEDO, OH (Toledo News Now) - The trial against Amanda Bacon should wrap up on Thursday.

Bacon is the Toledo mother accused of causing catastrophic injuries to her baby, which led to his death.

The defense and state rested their cases Wednesday morning. The state told members of the jury that this is a simple case, because Bacon has been caught in a web of lies. The defense said those lies came from a scared mother and hopes the jury understands her former roommate, Frank Jones, is responsible.

"The state of Ohio has not proven the identity of the person responsible for Avery's death, and that is Frank Jones," defense attorney Jane Roman told the jury in closing arguments. "The state of Ohio would like you to believe that because Amanda Bacon chose to be a prostitute, she was a bad mother, and because she was a bad mother, she murdered her youngest son."

Prosecutors say Bacon's actions show she was the one responsible.

"If Frank Jones was the killer, and you suspected him of doing it, why would you ask him to take the baby to the hospital? You know why? Because she is the killer. She's the murderer, and she's distancing herself from this whole thing," said Assistant Lucas County Prosecutor Ron Miller.

The jury deliberated for a few hours, but then stopped for the day mid-afternoon. Before stopping deliberations for the day, the jury asked the judge if they could review several pieces of video tape presented in the trial, including video of Bacon's interrogation by police.

The jury will reconvene Thursday morning to decide if Bacon is guilty of aggravated murder, murder and child endangerment.
