Hamilton Police: New 'very aggressive' scam targeting area

HAMILTON, OH (FOX19) -

Hamilton Police are alerting residents, saying that a new ‘very aggressive' scam is targeting the area.

Officers say that a resident has recently received a letter bearing a Canadian postmark. Inside was an official-looking letter that bore the likeliness of a Chase Bank cashier's check. Police say that the envelope had information that the individual had won $1.6 million.

The letter explained that the ‘winner' had to call a phone number and provide bank routing information so the money could be directly deposited in the individual's account. Officers say that the perpetrators followed up with the recipient by calling them at home and pressuring the individual for information.

The Hamilton Police Department encourages all residents to be diligent when protecting financial information.

Hamilton Police are currently working with the U.S. Secret Service.
