TOLEDO, OH (Toledo News Now) -

What once served as a funeral home, is now the most in demand place for parents to stay when their kids are in need of special treatment at Toledo hospitals.

The Ronald McDonald House on Monroe Street has been serving the community for more than three decades, but it has outgrown its current space and needs to expand.

It's not uncommon for all 14 rooms to be occupied for the night. Often times, the charity has no choice but to put families in local hotels because they don't want to turn them away. As a result, for the last couple of years, they have been campaigning for a bigger facility.

Groundbreaking is set for May 13, moving the facility across the street, and expanding it to 28 bedrooms. The outside of the building will also be painted in bright colors.

"Part of the reason we chose to be as colorful as we have is the kids are gonna be able to see that from the hospital and know that's where mom and dad are staying. So we wanted it to be fun and vibrant and a place that really inspired people to get better," said Chad Bringman, president of Ronald McDonald House of Northwest Ohio.

Increasing the number of bedrooms meant increasing the kitchen size, which Bringman says will be more family friendly.

The Ronald McDonald House does not charge families to stay. The organization focuses more on providing a close place for them to stay while their child gets better.

"We have to remember that when people knock on our doors, today is probably the worst day of their life. And they've traveled far from home, sometimes very unexpectedly. So we have a very short window of time for people to feel comfortable, to feel safe and know that this is a place they can stay, whether it's one day or three months or 19 months - however long that might be - they have to feel that they have a place that's clean, comfortable, but also, affordable," explained Bringman.

This week, the Ronald McDonald House will be launching a public campaign to raise money for the expansion project. So far, $7.2 million of the $8 million has been raised.
