(WMC-TV) - Tennesseans could soon be allowed to openly carry guns without a state-issued permit. The bill passed in the state Senate Tuesday.

Elaine Stubblefield who does not own a gun is shocked the Tennessee Senate approved a bill that will allow people to openly carry a handgun without a permit.

"This is the craziest thing I have heard. That just seems wrong," she said.

Currently Tennessee handgun owners who want to carry a gun openly must get a permit.

"That requires an eight hour class, firearms safety, marksmanship legal responsibilities," said Tom Givens with Rangemaster.

The only requirement to buy a gun is a criminal background check, according to the bill. That only takes a few minutes.

"If you don't know how to shoot the gun, you could go around and accidentally kill somebody's child or some other person," said Stubblefield.

Most of the Tennessee senators voted "yes" for the passage of the bill. State Senator Brian Kelsey, a Germantown Republican, wrote present but not voting. State Senator Reginald Tate, a Democrat from Memphis, did not vote at all.

"Carrying it in public without some training is somewhat irresponsible," said Givens.

Senators Tate and Kelsey did not return WMC Action News 5's calls for comment. To become law the bill still has to win approval from the House of Representatives and then be signed by the governor.
