UT Defensive Coordinator Heacock no stranger to Toledo

TOLEDO, OH (Toledo News Now) -

Jon Heacock's career has taken him full circle.

"I was here 30 years ago," said the 53-year-old Heacock. "I know the tradition. I know the town."

Heacock was a grad assistant back then. Three decades later, he's UT's Defensive Coordinator and he takes over a Rocket defense that in recent years has left a lot to be desired.

"We have not played great defense and we need to play great defense. You have to play great defense to win a championship," said Heacock.

Prior to his most recent stint as a cornerbacks coach at Purdue, Heacock worked his magic at Kent State turning the defense around. Now, UT's hoping for a repeat performance.

"Having Jon here to facilitate that, who has been at the top of the mountain on the defensive side of the football," said head coach Matt Campbell. "He's certainly a great leader to continue the growth of the football team."

He's got some work ahead. Toledo's defense finished 88th in the country. That's right around the average for the last couple of years. They return 9 of 11 starters which may or may not be a good thing.

"I think sometimes you get caught in the mentality: if the offense scores ,it's okay. it's not okay!" said Heacock.

Heacock doesn't plan on bringing drastic changes to the playbook. Instead, he just wants to make sure his boys do the job and do it right.
