Plan to convert YMCA to charter school moving forward

TOLEDO, OH (Toledo News Now) -

It looks like a plan to convert the former YMCA building in north Toledo into a charter school are one step closer to reality.

Horizon Science Academy has a signed agreement to buy the building from the YMCA. Some are asking that the YMCA stop that plan in order to sell the building to Toledo Public Schools. TPS would then use the building as a community hub, but it is still not clear TPS will get the money to fund that project. The district is hoping to receive a federal grant to run Toledo's Head Start program.

"The bigger issue is what would be better for that facility? Another charter school, or a facility that serves the neighborhood from prenatal all the way through second grade," said United North CEO Terry Glazer.

City officials say Mayor D. Michael Collins will take the advice of the city law director and vote to allow a special use permit for the school Tuesday evening. YMCA leaders say the Horizon Science Academy has agreed to back out of the deal and allow TPS to have the building, if the YMCA chooses.

"Horizon has been gracious enough, because of the nature of the community project such as that, that they would allow us to buy them out and walk away from the deal if we had an agreement with TPS,
said YMCA of Toledo President and CEO Brad Toft.
