(WMC-TV) - An army of volunteers from FedEx converged on Shelby Farms Tuesday, planting trees and doing other work to beautify the area.

The project is one of 15 that FedEx workers are participating in around the country.

For several hours Tuesday, 100 volunteers happily painted picnic tables and helped clean up debris at Shelby Farms.

For the past five years, FedEx has teamed up with the National Fish and Wildlife Foundation to do work in Memphis, Atlanta, Miami, and 13 other cities. The goal is to help the environment.

It is all part of FedEx's Earth Smart Outreach Initiative. Not only does it give volunteers a chance to beautify the park, but it also helps the environment.

The collaboration is aimed at addressing pressing urban environmental issues by focusing money and volunteer muscle on supporting sustainability projects around the country.

"Sustainability is really a way that, where we can reduce our emissions in various capacities," said FedEx volunteer Rachael Kesselman.

Volunteers also worked in the Greenline gardens, around the lakes and buffalo range.

"The support FedEx has given to this particular project is uplifting, and we have quite and investment here," said Shelby County Mayor Mark Luttrell.
