WAYCROSS, GA (WTOC) -

A father has now been arrested after his 10-year-old daughter was shot and killed by her brother.

It happened Friday in the 4900 block of Jana Lane in Waycross. The Ware County Sheriff's Office says 10-year-old Taylor Marie Jowers was accidentally shot by her brother as he was checking to make sure there were no bullets in the gun.

After the shot fired, the boy ran to the neighbor's house for help because his parents were gone to work at the time.

While investigating the shooting, Ware County detectives found the victim's father, Joshua Scott Jowers, to be a felon.

Jowers was arrested and charged with possession of a firearm by convicted felon. Officials say several other firearms were also found and seized by detectives.

Jowers is currently being held in the Ware County Jail.

An autopsy is scheduled to be performed Monday at the GBI Crime Lab in Savannah.

The investigation is ongoing, but investigators say the shooting has all indications of an accidental discharge of a firearm.
