Authorities investigating shooting at Continental Ballroom

BIRMINGHAM, AL (WBRC) -

Shots were fired at a Birmingham club, hundreds of teens flee the scene, and it took officers from three different agencies to get the situation under control.

On Saturday night around 10:30 p.m., police were called to the Continental Ballroom after a teen was shot. The club is located on the Homewood/Birmingham city line. When police arrived, they said they found 700 teenagers running from the building. "I had my officers calling for additional Homewood officers that we had working extra jobs, had to leave and come down here. We were inundated with kids," said Lt. Ken Atkinson with the Homewood Police Department.

Lt. Atkinson says it took officers from Homewood, Birmingham and the Sheriff's office to get the scene under control. And this isn't the first time police have been called to the club in recent weeks. "Unfortunately, this is something that's happening at Continental Ballroom," said Lt. Atkinson. "It creates a huge drain on our manpower to have to sit up here because we're not going to leave here with all these kids here, fight break out, we want to make sure everyone gets home safely."

This is a problem officers have already dealt with once. In 2010, officers went to the City of Birmingham and testified that this club was a "death trap" and needed to be closed.  The City of Birmingham shut the Continental down, but in recent months, the club has reopened.  It's unclear whether this is the same owners as before, but this time the club is marketing itself as the newest spot for teens. "Homewood, we need to sit down with the City of Birmingham and address it," said Lt. Atkinson.

We did reach out to the club's owner, but our call was not returned.

Also, there is no word on the condition of the teenager who was shot.
