Thief reportedly wraps wallet up in paper, steals it from grocery shopper

(WMC-TV) - A Mid-South woman thought she was being careful, but she became a victim at the grocery store, and it is what happened before the theft that left an East Memphis woman on edge.
Sandria Tedder knows the story all too well.
She did all she could to prevent her purse from getting taken while she was shopping for groceries, but someone snagged it anyway.
"I had my list out and was just buying a few groceries," she said.
Sunday while shopping at a Kroger on Poplar Avenue and Highland Street, Tedder had her purse over her shoulder until she need to use both hands.
"As soon as I turned on the organic aisle to get yogurt, they lifted up the paper, I couldn't see them, reached in and got the wallet," said Tedder.
She placed a newspaper over her purse, thinking that would help keep it safe, but she was wrong. A woman who had been following her around the store for 10 minutes took the wallet and ran.
"She was buying nothing, she just had a Memphis Flyer in there, and she wrapped my wallet up in there and left," said Tedder.
Within minutes, the suspect spent $185 at neighboring businesses before the card was canceled. It is a crime that she says she wants to remind other woman how easy they can become a victim.
"Do not take a huge purse with you and do not have it wide open or even anything sitting on top of it," said Tedder. "Try to just take the minimal amount in pockets or something around your waste. Anything to protect you from everything being stolen."
As for Kroger, they had no comment on the incident, pending the outcome of the investigation.
