Professional truck driver gives safe driving tips

TOLEDO, OH (Toledo News Now) -

There are more than 90,000 semi trucks on Ohio roads every day.

Truck drivers are quick to be blamed for many accidents, but recent stats may surprise you.

"You see how these cars are maintaining their speed, they're not lingering on my side? That's the way to pass a truck," said tank truck driver Ron Hawkins.

Hawkins has been a truck driver for 30 years, and he's one of the best in the country. He has over 2 million miles under his belt without a single accident.

With national work zone awareness week taking place from April 7 to the 11, Ron is hoping all drivers pay more attention while on the road.

Three out of four car-semi crashes are unintentionally caused by the driver of the car. The leading factor in those crashes: 35 percent of all semi involved highway fatalities occur in a semi's blind spot.

Hawkins has some advice to avoid these types of accidents.

"Don't linger, maintain your speed when you pass the driver, get to the point where you see both headlights in the rear view mirror and then move over so I have that comfort zone in case you need to make a panic stop, I have time to make a panic stop also," said Hawkins.
