(WMC-TV) - Dangerous intersections surround one Shelby County school. Earlier this year, a teacher lost her life after a crash near one of them. Now, officials have a plan to slow drivers down.

Tennessee Department of Transportation (TDOT) wants to turn one of the dangerous intersections into a roundabout, but people who live near New Allen Road and Ridgemont Avenue say the bigger problem is further down the road where a teacher died almost two months ago.

Keystone Elementary School feels different without teacher Janice Washington.

"She was a very energetic teacher, and we miss her buzz in the hallways," said Washington's friend, Rebekah Jackson.

The intersection where she died in February is still just as dangerous. It is near a daycare and down the street from Keystone Elementary School.

"Our teachers shouldn't feel afraid to travel down that road [New Allen Road], parents shouldn't either," said co-worker Chanel Conner.

TDOT will host a public meeting on Thursday to talk about making the dangerous intersection safer. One of the porposals would change the crossing into a roundabout.

"It's a step in the right direction, but I think it's for the wrong intersection," said Conner.

Teachers say the real trouble is where Washington died at New Allen Road and Hawkins Mill Road. At the intersection, people are coming from at least five directions.

TDOT plans to realign the tricky intersection, but those who drive it say they need a stoplight.

"You may think it's your turn and not realize people are coming from three different directions, so it would make it clear," said Jackson.

A public meeting will be held at Frayser-Raleigh Senior Center on Thursday at 6 p.m.
