Clarksville father arrested after 9-year-old son went missing

For the second time in a week, the parent of a runaway child has been charged with child abuse.

Paul N. Rutherford of Clarksville has been arrested for allegedly abusing his nine-year-old son, who ran away on Monday night and hid in the woods behind the house until after 3 am.

Phil Rutherford,  grandfather of the boy and the father of the suspect, told Channel 4 that his son had been on medication since he was nine years old and suffered from depression and mood swings.

"He's not going to be allowed to come back here," said Phillip Rutherford, the suspect's father.

The boy told investigators from the sheriff's department that his father punched him in the face and threatened to kill him.

Deputies said Paul Rutherford was violent and combative while they were investigating the case of his missing son.

Sheriff John Fuson said that Paul Rutherford had to be pepper-sprayed after trying to kick out the windows of the patrol car.

Phil Rutherford has custody of his grandson. The boy's mother died when he was very young.

A condition of release has been signed which prohibits Rutherford to contact the child once he is released from jail.
