(WMC-TV) - Memphis Light, Gas, and Water crews are working to repair old gas lines to keep residents safe from leaks.

Three feet wide and three feet deep is about the size of the large holes MGLW crews are digging in order to repair gas pipe leaks.

Thomas Cheairs and his neighbors are getting used to the sound.

"Lately we have seen quite a bit of [crews], but before this year not much," he said.

Crews are digging, sanding, welding and repairing a hole that cannot be missed.

"There have been some complaints about the smell of gas so they're doing some exploratory drilling and repairing what they find," said Cheairs.

MLGW says this it is not uncommon this time of year. They say cold weather results in more leaks than usual, but they do not have any extra crews out. Officials says crews will continue to work around the clock, but so far they have not had to call in additional help or use overtime.

And while some jobs take longer than others, neighbors will be relieved once the repair is finished.

If you think you smell gas or may be concerned about a leak you can report it by calling a emergency line at 901-258-4465.
