Colerain Twp. oil spill cleanup continues, salamanders recovered from pond

COLERAIN TOWNSHIP, OH (FOX19) -

Cleanup continues in Colerain Township after more than 20,000 gallons of crude oil spilled into the Oak Glen Nature Preserve.

The spill, which happened on March 17, is still undergoing daily inspections by the Shoreline Cleanup Assessment Team (SCAT). Thermal treatment to remove any remaining oil sheen on rocks and stream banks is continuing as weather allows.

Workers have also dug trenches and installed absorbent booms backed by straw bales to prevent oil-saturated soil from leaching oil into a nearby stream outside the original contamination zone. Crews are also improving the dam due to anticipated rain with estimated completion by Saturday.

Crews say that they have recovered salamanders from the pond. The salamanders have been transported to Boonshoft Museum in Dayton, Ohio, and will remain there until they can be safely released.

Officials announced that at least 11 animals are dead as a result to the contamination and 26 others are being cleaned and treated.

Found dead in the nature preserve include eight crayfish, two green frogs and a two-lined salamander. Twenty-six other animals are being cleaned and cared for before being released.
