UT begins sexual assault awareness campaign

TOLEDO, OH (Toledo News Now) -

The beginning of April marks the start of an awareness campaign about sexual assault, and one of the most common places for it to happen is on a college campus.

The YWCA H.O.P.E. Center, which is the area's only rape crisis center, came to the University of Toledo campus with a very sobering statistic from the Department of Justice: one in four women will be sexually assaulted in their lifetime.

Leaders from the H.O.P.E. Center and the UT Sexual Assault Education and Prevention program wanted the women in attendance to remember that as they watched two short films on how rapists target their victims.

The films reenacted how the crimes often happen at parties where alcohol and drugs are being abused.

The H.O.P.E. Center's Director Deb Stoll says sexual assaults can be difficult to prove and prosecute, and myths about attacks are getting in the way.

"You hear things like don't go out alone, watch where you park, don't wear sexy clothing, and those really don't hold true," Stoll said.  "Most rapists are known by the assailants.  It's someone that they know and maybe someone that they trust."

UT's campus is hosting a number of other events this month to raise awareness of sexual assault.  The next one is Thursday, April 3, at 5:30 pm, and will focus on an online campaign to stop blaming the victims of crimes.
