Wood County Sheriff's Office works to end child pornography online

WOOD COUNTY, OH (Toledo News Now) -

It's an ugly fact that as the Internet continues to expand its reach into our children's lives, so do predators. The Wood County Sheriff's Office is taking a proactive approach to stop child pornography in its tracks. They say children are being preyed upon online at an earlier age than ever before.

"Unfortunately the average age of first exposure to pornography on the Internet is eleven-years-old," said Captain Scott Frank of the Wood County Sheriff's Office.

With the click of a mouse millions of disturbing images are at your fingertips. Those images are kept and saved and distributed.

"Surveys tell us 36% of the industry in the Internet is related to child porn," said Frank.

He has a few tricks up his sleeve to catch prying eyes.

"We pose as juveniles on the Internet. We pose as adults," said Frank.

The sheriff's office is a partner agency with Ohio's Internet Crimes Against Children Task Force. They along with other local departments are working together searching, seizing, and putting people behind bars. They're working on two cases this week alone.

"There are a lot of ways these offenders get to our kids," said Frank.

The best way to keep your children safe is to talking with them, not taking away their computer privileges when they tell you what they saw.

"And kids know that and obviously they don't want their Internet taken away so sometimes they are reluctant to talk with their parents about it," said Frank.

The Internet porn industry shows no signs of slowing down.

"It's not going anywhere, our kids and the Internet. They are kind of shaping the future and unfortunately pornography is a part of that," said Frank.

Facebook posts from more than a year ago caused controversy at a west Toledo business Tuesday night. BYLINE: Victoria Idoni EAST TOLEDO, OH (WTOL) - This is an all too familiar scene on the roads: people getting distracted behind the wheel. April is National Distracted Driving Awareness Month. One month out of the year is certainly not enough to observe safer driving habits. This is something we should always keep in mind. The good news is, there are ways in which our changing culture is evolving to deal with technology and how it can both hel...
