Group pushes to save old Tennessee Brewery building

(WMC-TV) - A historic brewery in downtown Memphis could be demolished this year if nobody plans to buy it. A local group is doing what it can to get the building sold.

Preservationists are holding events in the old Tennessee brewery building, hoping those will garner interest in reopening it.

The building is boarded up at 495 Tennessee Street. It opened in 1890, closed in 1954, and has been vacant ever since.

If nobody buys the 62,000 square foot structure, the current owners say it will be demolished on August 1, 2014.

Preservationists have taken to Facebook in an effort to save the building. The group is planning a six week blitz beginning April 24. It will host events with a beer garden, cafes, live music, retail, food trucks, and art performances, in hopes that crowds downtown for Memphis In May will turn out to save the Tennessee Brewery building.

There is some opposition, though. People who live in the area are concerned about the crowds and noise that could come with the redevelopment.
