Government Center rent hikes as Toledo’s budget is updated

TOLEDO, OH (Toledo News Now) -

Toledo no longer has a $418,000 budget surplus. That, according to a memo issued Friday by the Collins Administration to city council members.

$15,000 will be spent on a jail feasibility study. Another $9,432 will pay off credit card bills leftover from the Ball Administration.

The biggest cost comes from the state raising the rent the city pays at the Government Center for office space.

"It's tough times right now that the state wants to raise the rent at Government Center practically 50% and we continue to lose appropriations from the state of Ohio," said Toledo Finance Director George Sarantou.

He adds the Collins Administration will not fund CareNet and a program for community murals. It will be up to the council to find funding elsewhere.

"So we're just making a suggestion that there are some solutions here that can be looked at," said Sarantou.

However four Toledo pools and a splash pad will re-open. The Collins Administration says the $266,000 will come from salary savings.

"There are seven cadets in the current Toledo Police class that will not graduate so as a result that will free up money to pay for the pools," said Sarantou.

On the positive side, Toledo's 2014 income tax projections through February are 14.6% ahead of last year at this time. If that trend continues, the city will meet its goal of $165 million in tax collections.

"Tight budget as usual, but we can get through this," said Sarantou.

The City Council's deadline for approving the 2014 budget is Monday.
