FINDLAY, OH (Toledo News Now) -

An art studio in downtown Findlay with a knack for helping the community was recently awarded over half a million dollars in state grant money. The studio is planning on using that money to continue their good work for a gifted group of people.

Kan Du Studio in Findlay has been at their downtown location for 4 years. Now they want to expand into a full community visual arts center, and some extra state funding will help.

Opened in 2007, Kan Du Studio gives people with developmental disabilities a chance to tap into their creative side. They are paid minimum wage, but if their art sells, they get 80% commission.

"Not only is it giving them that steady income, but it's also building their self esteem and giving a sense of self worth," said Erika Miklovic, Kan Du Studio manager.

The current studio holds 12-15 artists.

"We are busting at the seams here," said Miklovic.

The plan is to use fundraising to purchase a new property and then use the recently acquired grant money to renovate the new studio. A location has not been decided yet, but they would like to stay downtown, especially with the new Marathon Center for Performing Arts beginning construction this spring.

"Between the two organizations, I think there is a lot of opportunity to build the arts here in Hancock County beyond what it already is, which is pretty spectacular," said Constance Ament, Superintendent of Blanchard Valley Center, which helps increase opportunities for people with developmental disabilities.

After double overtime, the Toledo Walleye came out on top and beat the Indy 3-2 Thursday night for a sweep in the series. Even though the fish had a 3-0 lead in the first round playoff series, the toughest thing to do in hockey is to beat a desperate team on their home ice.  Halfway through a second overtime Kyle Bonis sets up Christian Hillbrich to score the game winning goal.  The Walleye now advances to the second round. They will play the winner of the Fort Wayne and ...
