Lights out wrongly threatened on The Rendezvous

(WMC-TV) - The Rendezvous, famous for its ribs, wants to smoke out some scammers. Rendezvous co-owner John Vergos says he nearly a believed the person on the other end of a call last week who claimed to be with MLGW.

"I just think it's a shameful, shameful thing," he said. "I mean, I consider myself a reasonably sophisticated person, but they made me think this was somewhat legitimate."

The caller told Vergos he had one hour to pay a $1,000 plus a past-due bill or else utilities to the restaurant would be cut during business hours.

"He said, "Well, you need to go to CVS or Walgreens and get some kind of prepaid card to pay,' and that really confirmed to me it was a scam," said Vergos.

According to the Better Business Bureau, other customers have received similar calls. They are always urged to pay delinquent bills using pre-paid cards available at many pharmacies and grocery stores.

But the BBB says be suspicious of callers who demand immediate pavement for any reason. Additionally, they advise to never give out personal information to anyone who calls or emails you unsolicited, and they say to never wire money or provide debit, credit, or pre-paid card information to someone you don't know.

Also, MLGW never directs customers to make payments through a specific method.

"But I just thought the word needed to get out cause, I'd hate to see someone lose their hard earned dollars to some scammers," said Vergos.

Call the BBB, MLGW, and your local police department if you think you've been targeted by this scam.
