Program brings fresh produce to Toledo food deserts

TOLEDO, OH (Toledo News Now) -

Many areas of Toledo could be classified as food deserts.

"There is food deserts in Toledo, and what that is is gaps in neighborhoods were there aren't grocery stores, farmers markets, really access to the health foods that people should eat," said YMCA of Greater Toledo President and CEO Brad Toft.

A new partnership between the YMCA, The United Way and the Toledo-Lucas County Health Department is working to solve that problem.

By the end of this summer, 23 kiosks offering fresh, fairly priced and locally grown produce will be set up in Stop and Go stores around the city. Shopper say they hope the new, healthy option will help people kick their bad habits.

"Hopefully people can break from their addictions to cigarettes and alcohol and turn to healthier foods," said Chuck Childers.
