Brutal winter leads to more traffic accidents, more injuries

TOLEDO, OH (Toledo News Now) -

As you might expect, the record winter resulted in more traffic accidents – 173 more to be exact.

The Ohio State Highway Patrol says they have responded to 479 property damage crashes and 165 injury crashes in the state this winter, for a total of 644.

Last winter the patrol responded to 329 property damage crashes and 139 injury crashes. That makes a total of 471 last winter.

"It's nonstop. Every day you come in, for the most part we are a proactive law enforcement agency, we look to stop crashes, were when weather is like this, we become reactive," said Lieutenant William Bowers with the patrol.

Bowers says he will now be taking a closer look at the numbers, to try and lower the number of crashes for next winter.

"Obviously it was a record snowfall this year, hopefully next year we don't encounter that, but we will be making plans, every season we do change our shifts around to accommodate the crash picture," said Bowers.
