15 Maumee mail boxes smashed, Sheriff looking for culprits

MAUMEE, OH (Toledo News Now) -

Some Lucas County residents say there's a vandal on the loose in their normally quiet neighborhood.

Many of them woke up to a not so pleasant surprise Saturday morning.

Brian Reagan is one of 15 homeowners who spent the weekend gluing and stapling his mailbox back together.

"I'd like to see whoever did it get caught," said Reagan.

Reagan and neighbors in the Quarry and Homestead subdivisions are upset after vandals knocked down and tore apart their mailboxes late Saturday and Sunday night. He says he's never worried about safety on his street until now.

"We've lived here 19 years, and in that time, the worst thing we've ever seen in the neighborhood is a pumpkin or somebody's house got Tp'd," said Reagan.

This prank, is going to be a costly one for Reagan and others, who now have to pay to replace their boxes.

"I think the best price for a whole unit is about $180, and the association here requires you have the same type of mailbox," said Reagan.

The one that was destroyed was the original, nearly two decades old. Reagan says it's going to be a hassle tracking down a new one. He and deputies are hoping to save neighbors the time and money by helping to catch the culprits.

The Lucas County Sheriff's Office is asking anyone who may know who's responsible to give them a call, at 419-213-4917.

"I'd just like to get a look and see who it is. I'm sure other people would like to too," said Reagan.

If your mailbox is ever vandalized there are three simple steps you need to take to protect yourself.

First, is calling your local authorities and get the incident on record. Second, contact your local post office. The USPS gets involved anytime a mailbox is destroyed because it is a federal offense; they have their own forms that need to be filled out.

Lastly, if you had "valuable mail" stolen, such as a check or a new credit card, contact the issuing company immediately.
