Fire danger ratings increase in northern Arizona

WILLIAMS, AZ (CBS5) -

The U.S. Forest Service is warning state recreationists to exercise caution with fires in northern Arizona as conditions continue to dry out and the temperatures warm.

Fire managers on the Kaibab and Coconino National Forests and Grand Canyon National park have moved several areas in a "high" fire danger, while others remain in "low" to "moderate" due to respective moisture levels.

Wildfires can start easily in the "high" danger areas, according to the U.S. Forest Service. Small fuels, such as grasses and needles, can readily ignite, and unattended campfires and brush fires are likely to escape and spread easily, according to the USFS.

Current fire conditions are listed for the following areas.

Coconino National Forest

  • Mogollon Rim Ranger District, moderate
  • Flagstaff Ranger District, moderate
  • Red Rock Ranger District, high

Kaibab National Forest

  • North Kaibab Ranger District, low
  • Tusayan Ranger District, high
  • Williams Ranger District, high

Grand Canyon National Park

  • South Rim, high
  • North Rim, low

No restrictions or closures are currently in effect, but all forest and park visitors are asked to be careful with campfires and other ignition sources such as cigarettes, according to the USFS.

Communities can also help reduce the risk of damage from potential wildfire by becoming knowledgeable about and engaged in actions to plan and protect their homes and neighborhoods from wildfires, the USFS said. More information is available at www.fireadapted.org
