Crime down dramatically in Oregon over past decade

OREGON, OH (Toledo News Now) -

The city of Oregon has seen a dramatic drop in crime over the past decade.

The Oregon Police department says there were 3,879 crimes reported in 2003. That number dropped to 2,437 in 2013. That's a drop of more than 35 percent.

Oregon Police Chief Mike Navarre credits the work of his officers for the drop.

"The crime in Oregon is very manageable. The burglaries that do occur, our directives do a great job following up on them and in almost all cases are able to determine who is responsible," said Navarre.

Oregon has not seen a shooting or stabbing in the past two years.

Navarre says new technology has also played a role in solving the city's many burglary and credit card fraud cases. He also has some advice for citizens to avoid becoming a victim of this type of crime.

"Just use common sense and it will go a long way toward keeping those crimes down. You will never eliminate them but you can minimize them," said Navarre.
