Grant helps expand Whitehouse community garden

WHITEHOUSE, OH (Toledo News Now) -

The village of Whitehouse has awarded a $545 grant to the community garden. It may seem like a small amount, but officials say it will go a long way.

The garden began last summer. Nine Whitehouse families planted produce and flowers on 14 20 foot by 20 foot plots, which covered about 11 acres in total.

This year, there will be more plots, and a new water line will be run to the area. The money will also be used to purchase gardening supplies and landscape timbers to edge the area.

"Many of the lots in the subdivisions are small so people can't have a garden in their back yard so this gives them a chance to garden have fresh produce and have healthier living," said Whitehouse Community Development Coordinator Barbara Knisely.
