Streetcar work begins on Main Street between Sixth and Court

CINCINNATI, OH (FOX19) -

Main Street between Sixth and Court will be reduced to one lane through October as underground electric work commences associated with the Cincinnati Streetcar and infrastructure improvements.

Turns onto cross streets also will be restricted at times.

In addition, for the next month, Seventh Street between Walnut and Main, and Eighth Street between Sycamore and Main, both will be reduced to one lane to allow for the complete reconstruction of electrical vaults in the center of these major intersections.

"Doing this work contiguously block by block minimizes the length of time for the disruption," said John Deatrick, project executive for the streetcar. "It is the most efficient, cost-effective way for Duke Energy's contractor to accomplish all the labor-intensive steps necessary to modernize the utility's infrastructure and prepare the area for the streetcar. The contractor will be replacing electric vaults, installing new conduit and switching customers to new service lines during this period."

The City's streetcar team and Duke construction-management personnel will be working with area residents and businesses to minimize their disruption.

The first blocks of Main Street to be affected lie between Sixth and Eighth. Work begins Monday night. Other blocks of Main, north to Court Street, also will have lane restrictions as crews progress through their work.

Motorists should allow extra time when traveling in this area or consider alternative routes to their intended destination. Bus riders should visit www.go-metro.com for updated route information.
