Vail Meadows back up and running one year after devastating fire

HOLLAND, OH (Toledo News Now) -

It has been one year since a tragic fire took the lives of 10 therapeutic horses at Vail Meadows Equestrian Center in Oregon.

Flames consumed a barn taking the lives of the 10 horses and other farm animals.

"It was pretty devastating standing there watching the fire we knew the horses and the ducks and the pigs were all in there," said Joy Lyn McGee, who volunteers at the center.

A year later, the area where the barn once stood is an empty field.

McGee says replacing the horses has been one of the biggest challenges, but donations have allowed the center to do just that.

"Eventually we did get enough horses where we could continue the program and the volunteers and the riders are learning to love those horses just as they did the ones that were here previously," said McGee. "It was just heartwarming. The people that donated money or anything that we needed they were here to help us."

That help included seven new horses and materials to add on to a bar that did not catch fire.

"The Program is running exactly how it was a year ago before the fire. We have the same clients, the horses are doing wonderful for us so really we're back up to running just as we were before," said McGee.

McGee gives the credit to the community- for pulling together during their time of need.
