Indians ace Justin Masterson appears to be headed to free agency after the 2014 season. The team and player have broken off talks after weeks of discussing a long term contract extension.
Masterson, who will turn 29 on Saturday, was seeking a three year deal worth $51-million, according to Fox Sports baseball insider Ken Rosenthal. It is believed he'll command almost twice that much on the free agent market. He is being compared to Cincinnati pitcher Homer Bailey who just signed for six years and $105 million a few weeks ago.
Talks could resume again, but the Indians usually do not like to talk contract during the season. Spring training this year was viewed as their best chance to sign him long term.
The Indians open the 2014 season on March 31st in Oakland, Masterson will be on the mound that night.
