WOOD COUNTY, OH (Toledo News Now) -

Wood County humane agents need your help to solve a gruesome animal cruelty case.

A cat was found dead on the side of the road on the outskirts of Bowling Green a week ago, but it's how the cat was killed that has investigators wanting answers.

It started as a call about a cat on the side of the road in a carrier. It turned into an animal cruelty case involving a cat being shot and killed through the carrier and dumped on the side of the road.

On March 13, the Wood County Humane Society got a call from a mother who was with her young son driving along Liberty hi Road near Long Judson Road. The woman stated there was pet carrier with something inside on the side of the road.

When humane agents came to investigate, they made a gruesome discovery.

"We went out to check it out and the more we looked at it, the cat had been shot inside of the carrier. We took it back to the shelter, we examined it a little bit more and sure enough, it had been shot…through the carrier," said D'Ann Gregory, a Wood County Humane Agent.

Gregory said the woman's son was slightly traumatized by the scene and it's a scene she hasn't witnessed herself.

"Have not seen anything like this; Our cases are very different every day and I'm sure every one of us cruelty investigators can tell you that, that each case is different," said Gregory.

Investigators don't want to speculate as to how the cat wound up shot, dead and dumped on the side of the road, but criminal indicators point to a likely cause.

"We can't prove this right at this time, but we do know that domestic violence and cruelty to animals sometimes does run together," said Gregory.

The cat is described as a black and white male. They are asking if you know anything to call D'Ann Gregory at 419-601-1200. If a suspect is caught and prosecuted they could face jail time.
