(Toledo News Now) - More than 100 people attended the Lake Erie Waterkeeper Conference on Thursday.

A major topic of discussion was the recently announced $10 million project to reduce open dumping in the lake. The project aims to reduce the annual summer algae bloom, which closes beaches and turns lake water green, as well as protecting drinking water.

The President of Lake Erie Waterkeeper says he's encouraged by the project.

"We look at it as something positive and something that's physical. We have had tons of studies, they have been going on for years, this is one of the first times were we have actually had some direct action that is going to happen out in the lake our surrounding the lake, dealing with the lake," said David Spangler.

Thursday was the ninth annual Lake Erie Waterkeeper Conference. For more information, visit http://www.lakeeriewaterkeeper.org/.
