TPD installing 30 more Sky Cop cameras

TOLEDO, OH (Toledo News Now) -

Toledo Police have begun installing 30 new cameras around the city as part of phase two of the Sky Cop camera system.

The department finished phase one of the project back in January, installing more than 70 cameras around the city. Those cameras were placed in central, north and east Toledo. Now TPD is expanding the network to west and south Toledo.

"Those parts of the town need them and can get good use out of them but were not allocated in that first initial phase of cameras," said Sergeant Joe Heffernan.

Public input and crime stats are the leading factors which determine camera placement. Two of the newest locations are at Byrne Road at Airport Highway and near UT's campus at the intersection of Dorr and Douglas.

Now that the cameras have been operational for over a year, the department has noticed a reduction in crime and change in public perception.

"We've had several locations where businesses have expanded their business after the cameras have gone up because their businesses have gotten so much better," said Heffernan.  "This is all citizen driven. People want to have these cameras, people want to feel secure in their neighborhoods and that's why we do this."

Phase two of installation is expected to last through April. The department will decided if farther expansion of the camera network is needed sometime in the future.
