LUCAS COUNTY, OH (Toledo News Now) -

The Lucas County Health Department is hoping to make some changes, and gain more employees in the near future. It is looking for a three percent increase to its budget.

Wednesday, health department officials spoke to the public about the proposed increase for the first time. Officials said they need the increase to hire more people, and to make up for past cuts to their budget.

This three percent increase would not necessarily raise taxes, but it would take away from money that would go towards government officials. Officials said they took an eight percent reduction four years ago, and they would like to gain that money back and hire more people.

They are looking to fill two positions within the health department.

"First is a general funded sanitarian, so we can do field work in the environmental programs. The second position that I would really like to get back is an epidemiologist. An epidemiologist helps study diseases and how best to attack and address these diseases," said Larry Vasko, Deputy Health Commissioner.

Vasko also says the health department would ask for another three percent increase for the following year, making it an eventual six percent increase. A public meeting was held Wednesday night at the Springfield Township Hall to discuss the matter.
