OREGON, OH (Toledo News Now) - Oregon City Schools has canceled school 17 times this school year. To blame for the cancellations are a myriad of weather events, including a tornado, fog and of course snow and cold.
Some area districts have opted to make up extra days at the end of the school year. Others have extended the school day and canceled planned teacher work days. It looks like Oregon will have to employ all of these strategies to make up all 17 days.
The Oregon School board approved a plan to make up the days on Tuesday. Nine of the 17 days have been forgiven by the state. The district will add two days to the end of the school year, and cancel two planned teacher work days.
That leaves four days to make up. To do that, the district will extend the school day starting March 25. High school and middle school students will see 30 minutes added to the end of their school day. Elementary students will start school 15 minutes earlier and stay 15 minutes later.
The district has also canceled all planned 2-hour-delay days for the remainder of the school year.
"I can honestly say that we are going to use every minute of the day up until the end of the year to make sure it's educationally sound," said Superintendent Dr. Lonny Rivera.
More snow days or closures for any reason could mean more days added to the end of the school year.
