Close-knit community comes out to honor fallen officer

ELMORE, OH (Toledo News Now) -

It was a somber Saturday in Elmore.

Residents came to say good-bye to Officer Jose "Andy" Chavez as his funeral possession passed through downtown Elmore under a large American flag.

Everybody here knew Andy.

Elmore is a small, close-knit community.

There's no telling how long the grieving will last.

"It's a small town. Everybody comes and goes. People still know each other. It's a real tragedy," said resident Dylan Fletcher.

Royan Taylor agreed.

"Officer Andy was a good guy. Everybody knows him. Small town atmosphere," said Ms. Taylor.

Andy had been on the Elmore Police Department for two years, was married and had two children.

The way he died is especially troubling for residents to grasp.

Andy was off-duty enjoying a night out with relatives and friends when he was shot and killed last Sunday morning in a Fremont bar.

"It's a tragedy. Wrong place at the wrong time. Minding your own business and this happened," said Ms. Taylor.

More than 100 cars were in the procession.

Many came from law enforcement agencies throughout Northwest Ohio.

Lights on the vehicles flashed as a group of firefighters stood at attention honoring Andy.

"It's very humbling that we have people like that," said Lake Township Fire Chief Bruce Moritz.

Christopher Nelson of the Oregon Fire Department agreed.

"Amazing. Leaves you speechless," said Mr. Nelson.

A sign outside the Elmore Fire Department sums up the feeling of Elmore residents about Andy.

It reads 'You will not be forgotten."
