Public sounds off on planned Perrysburg Costco

PERRYSBURG, OH (Toledo News Now) -

There was a public hearing Thursday night on the proposed Costco store in Perrysburg.

It gave residents a chance to sound off before the city council on the project.

Costco wants to build a 154,000 square foot store on a 26 acre site at the intersection of Eckel Junction and State Route 25.

Perrysburg leaders say the project would be a boost to economic development in the area.

Jeanine Samples disagrees.

"I think economic development has to be done very carefully. Just because it's business does not mean it should be here" said Samples.

Perrysburg residents packed council chambers; many of them opposed to the project. They say it's not that they hate Costco. They worry about more traffic congestion.

"This is a much bigger box store than what should be allowed in the city of Perrysburg," said resident Dick Currie.

"And I know that these big box stores want to build where they want to build. There already is a lot of traffic there," added Jim Haas

Some council members say new business will eventually be built at the intersection, and why not Costco?

They argue the store will attract customers from across the region and offer well paying jobs, just like the Costco in West Toledo. Council members say traffic complaints will be addressed.

We have a massive traffic improvement program going through right now. We'll purchase right of way, expanding Eckel Junction and Route 25 with more turn lanes and access," said Councilman Todd Grayson.

Next, a special use permit must be acted on for a final site plan by the city council and the Perrysburg planning and zoning committee.  Action is expected by the end of the month.

Toledo has a long and storied history of hockey in the city going back to the first team, the Toledo Mercurys, who played their first season in 1947-48. Other iterations included the Blades, the Hornets, the Goaldiggers and the Storm. For a short time, in 1949-50, the team was actually called the Toledo Buckeyes.
