Snow day could delay Ohio Graduation Testing

TPS prepares for the Ohio Graduation Test TPS prepares for the Ohio Graduation Test
(Toledo News Now) -
Another monstrous winter storm is scheduled to barrel through our area Tuesday night, potentially granting students one more calamity day. However, interrupting classes this time could have an impact on more than an average school day.

The annual Ohio Graduation Test started on Monday across the state for sophomores, juniors and seniors. Toledo Public School officials say preparations for the test this year have been different due to the brutal winter.

"It has been difficult. In fact we've missed 12 days of school. We've tried to overcome that by having Saturday sessions and after school sessions," said Jim Gault of Toledo Public Schools.

These sessions made up missed instructional days. Now with another storm on the way there is a chance school will close on Wednesday. If it does TPS has a plan to make up the missed test day.

"In the event that we do and there is no school tomorrow the writing portion of the OGT will be pushed back to Monday and we will continue on Thursday and on Friday with the social studies," said Gault.

The Ohio Department of Education allows districts to make up testing all of next week. TPS officials say they will make the determination on a school closure Wednesday morning.

Superintendent Dr. Romules Durant says he had a telephone conference with his cabinet Tuesday night.    At that time, he had everyone explain what they had heard about the storm and how much it could affect roads and busses.

Durant says unless he is compelled to make a decision late Tuesday, he expects to meet with other school leaders between 5 and 5:30 a.m. Wednesday morning.

With TPS already using 12 calamity days in this historic winter, a lot goes into figuring out if school should be kept open, delayed, or canceled.

"Once we hit about 6:00 a.m. we want to make a decision. Because right about then, busses start rolling out to the high schools and getting out to the area. So we want to make sure we're responsive to our own operations but more importantly, allowing parents enough time," said Durant.
