Vandalism strikes new Toledo building months before completion

It is no secret that graffiti is prevalent in the city of Toledo, and vandals have wasted no time in targeting a new building that is not even completed yet.

If you drive down the Anthony Wayne Trail you may have noticed the new project with brick that has recently been defaced.

"It's unfortunate. We had the temporary fencing around it and they find a way to get in. It's unfortunate," said Julie Cousino of the Toledo Waterways Initiative.

This building is one part of a multimillion dollar project to reduce pollution in Toledo's waterways, an overall goal of the Toledo Waterways Initiative. Just months away from completion, the building was tagged, likely by a gang marking their territory.

This isn't the first time this new waste water screening facility has been targeted. Equipment and construction supplies have also been damaged.

"The contractor's responsible for that, they're responsible for that site. Unfortunately they've had a little bit of vandalism," said Cousino.

The good news for tax payers is the contractor is responsible for cleaning up this graffiti and any other damage until the city takes over the site.

Cleaning up will not be cheap or easy. The building features a special type of masonry block that cannot be sand blasted.

"We don't want it miscolored, so we want to use a proper way to remove it," said Cousino.

A permanent fence will go up in May when the project is complete, hopefully eliminating the criminal activity.
