AVON, OH (WOIO) -

Two cases of the whooping cough were recently reported in Avon Public Schools which prompted the district to notify parents, like Michelle Harms, of the health alert.

Harms relayed her worries to 19 Action News, "Whenever there is something like that there is a little bit of concern."

Whooping cough is a highly contagious bacteria that is often mistaken for a cough from a common cold.

The organisms can be spread by sneezing, coughing or even just talking.

So Lorain County Health Commissioner David Covell says he is not taking any chances.

"It is serious enough for us to make sure it does not spread," Covell explained.

The commissioner also says in rare cases of a preexisting medical condition the whooping cough can be fatal but the best protection is the common vaccine.
