NDA twirler hoping for college scholarship after winning international titles

TOLEDO, OH (Toledo News Now) -

As a kid Miranda Van Hoozen liked the usual stuff; softball, basketball, piano. Later she says she found something that combined 3 sports into one: baton twirling.

Now, Miranda has won international titles in the sport.

Miranda is a senior at Notre Dame Academy, and is a feature twirler at St. John's.

She says baton has been a passion since she first tried it 14 years ago at the age of 4.

Several days a week, Miranda works with her coach, Andrea Whiting. Twirling is baton, gymnastics and ballet combined into one sport.

"Baton twirling is the whole package, and a lot of people just don't understand that. They think it's just a girl, holding a stick on the field, marching. It's so much more than that. It's definitely very athletic. A lot of grace, talent, everything goes into it. She's taken the dance and the gymnastics to make her the total package that she is," said Whiting.

"[You need] dedication and you have to have really good cardio because let me tell you – going through one routine in 2 and a half minutes will take the wind out of me," said Miranda.

Miranda hopes to earn a college scholarship for baton twirling. She competes at the state, national and international level.

"Every three or four years we go to worlds, and they're in the Netherlands or in Belgium. I actually just got back from Disney world last week and that was an international competition there," said Miranda.
