Maumee Police Chief: Department had many accomplishments in 2013

MAUMEE, OH (Toledo News Now) -

The Maumee Police Department looked back at the year 2013 at a City Council meeting Monday night.

Chief James MacDonald said the department had some major accomplishments in the previous year. A schools resource officer was added to Maumee Middle School, and there were zero traffic fatalities in the city of Maumee.

Response times did increase from the previous year, though.

Five officers retired in 2013, but the department was able to hire four new cops.

MacDonald also looked to the future in his presentation Monday night, saying the department will focus on traffic enforcement in 2014.

"We're looking at new patrol strategy called, 'place-based policing.' We're going to focus a little more on the corridors that attach to Toledo and kind of target enforcement in those areas," said MacDonald.

MacDonald also told council that his police force had gained a better connection with the public, helping officers and detective solve many crimes in 2013.
