NEW: Cleveland hires law firm in police chase lawsuit

19 Action News Reporter Ed Gallek has learned, Cleveland City Officials have hired an outside law firm to defend itself in a lawsuit over a 2012 police chase and shooting.

Officers fired 137 shots and killed two people, and a federal wrongful death lawsuit has been filed on behalf of the families.

This means one law firm will be defending the city and the officers involved in the chase and shooting even though the city has already punished dozens of officers involved.

One supervisor has even been fired. The officers in the shooting have not been punished yet, but they may still face criminal charges.

The city has hired Stephen Funk of Roetzel and Andress.

We've learned Funk was also involved in defending the city in a federal lawsuit over a police chase and violent arrest of Edward Henderson. That case ended in a settlement.

Attorney David Malik represents one of the families in this case.

"This is the  perfect opportunity to ask the city if they would be interested in being part of a collaborative that would work to reform the police department," says Malik.
