Amazing artwork revealed at St. Aloysius in BG

BOWLING GREEN, OH (Toledo News Now) -

By removing layers, upon layers of paint, a team of restorers is revealing an original mural at St. Aloysius Church in Bowling Green.

From afar you can't see what type of work is being done.

But get up close and you can see that behind the layers and layers of white paint there is beauty.

"You can't even tell that it's there and then they started stripping the paint off and faces started emerging and halos, and all kinds of stars, it's just amazing that that's underneath there," said parishioner Denise Foos.

In 2007, a member of St. Aloysius approached father Mark Davis and offered to fund the art restoration.

"After thinking about it and talking about it for so long it's almost surreal having it actually happening," said Father Davis.

Some older members of the church, remember seeing the artwork many years ago, but may not remember exactly what it looked like.

One church member said they can remember sitting and counting the stars in the sky of the mural.

Evergreene Architectural Arts is doing the restoration.

"It's just a great opportunity to help the parish enjoy their past and their future with this beautiful artwork that's been covered up for such a long time," said restorer Jill Eide.

The artwork is believed to be from the early 1930s and painted by artist Felix Luftucker.

"The paint he used is very strong, and we were fortunate enough that he used this type of paint. It's resilient enough over these five layers of paint to still be quite strong and evident underneath it all," said Ms. Eide.

The project is expected to be completed in 3-4 months.
