Hattiesburg Cultural Center holds Freedom Summer dialogue program

HATTIESBURG, MS (WDAM) -

This is a news release from the Hattiesburg Cultural Center

Come to the Hattiesburg Cultural Center, 723 Main Street, Tuesday, March 4 for the second installment of the Freedom Summer Dialogues presented by the Historic Hattiesburg Downtown Association, Hattiesburg Arts Council, Historic Eureka School Museum, USM Center for Black Studies and The First Bank.

The topic of this session is "The Political Winds of Change," featuring guest speaker Robert Moses, Civil Rights leader and founder of the U.S. Algebra Project (a national, nonprofit organization that uses mathematics as an organizing tool to ensure quality public school education for every child in America).

During the 1960s, Moses was an integral participant in the Civil Rights Movement, organizing voter registration drives, sit-ins and Freedom Summer Schools for the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee.  Today, he runs The U.S. Algebra Project.  In recognition of his work with low-income and minority children through the Algebra Project, Moses became the sixth recipient of the Heinz Award in the Human Condition.

The Freedom Summer Dialogues will continue through May and conclude with the Freedom Summer 1964 50th Anniversary Conference. The next dialogue session "The Role of the Arts" will be Tuesday, April 1 and "The Role of Women in the Movement" Tuesday, May 6 both at the Hattiesburg Cultural Center 11:30am to 1pm.  For more information on the Freedom Summer Conference visit www.usm.edu/summer64hattiesburg.
