(Toledo News Now) -

Last week America's darling, Shirley Temple Black, passed away at 85.  She had a remarkable life as a child actress, singer, dancer and even a U. S. ambassador.

As a 6-year old in the 1930s, Ms. Temple grabbed the country's heartstrings.  She was an irrepressible ray of sunshine warming a nation struggling with the cold reality of an extended depression.  Remarkably, Ms. Temple's movies still get TV time.  Whenever I see her dancing or singing, I think of my own mom.  She loved those movies.  I guess they provided escapist moments for a generation that knew true hardship and deprivation.

Shirley Temple was a child star who grew into a productive public servant. She was a true American icon, a constant star that shone brightest when America needed her most.
