TOLEDO, OH (Toledo News Now) -

As a freshman at Rogers, Jasmyne Smith was developing quite the reputation on the basketball court. No opponent could stop her and MAC schools desperately wanted her.

"She is a competitor," said her Father and Rogers Head Coach Lamar Smith. "She works very hard.  It's been that way since she was a little kid."

All that hard work appeared to be paying off. Smith was well on her way to accepting a Division 1 Scholarship, but everything changed the summer heading into her sophomore season.

"I feel to the floor screaming and I knew it wasn't good," Jasmyne recalled.

Smith had torn her left ACL and was forced to watch her entire sophomore season from the bench.

"Watching your team play from the bench, it was the hardest thing I've ever done," said Jasmyne.

Smith worked all year at a comeback, but then suffered another setback in the middle of her junior season.

"I knew what it was and I knew I would be out the rest of the season. I was crushed," said Jasmyne.

This time, she had torn her other ACL. Suddenly all those offers that were on the table from her freshman year were gone.

"It was very scary. I didn't know what was going to happen," said Jasmyne.

Smith was at a crossroads. The comeback wouldn't be easy.

"I asked her, do you want to do this?" recalls her dad.

"I told him I was always going to keep trying," said Jasmyne.

That is exactly what she did. For 6 months, Smith and her father trained every day. Little by little came success and eventually, the thing she wanted most: a Division 1 offer. From Miami of Ohio.

"It was a relief," said Jasmyne. "It was something I worked so hard for and I finally got what I deserved."

It wasn't easy but then again Jasmyne Smith has never had a problem putting in the extra work.
